Winter Olympics: Buhari Extends Wishes As Nigeria Makes Debut…Elegbeleye, Others Cheer Team Nigeria

To serve as moral booster and show of patriotism, President Muhammadu Buhari has on Friday extended his best wishes to Team Nigeria as it begins its historic appearance at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea.

President Buhari’s goodwill message was contained in a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, in Abuja on Friday.

President Buhari assured the athletes that Nigeria stands with them throughout the competition.

“Your patriotism, sacrifice, hard work and personal dedication in choosing to stand with our homeland and lift our flag high at the PyeongChang Olympic Stadium in South Korea, will continue to inspire Nigerians, especially the young people,’’ he said.

The President, who had earlier approved the appointment of a Chef de Mission to take care of the team, assured the Olympians of the unflinching support of the Federal Government.

He thanked all those who made their participation in the games possible, particularly members of Corporate Nigeria.

President Buhari wished Team Nigeria, who “clearly represents the resilient spirit of the Nigerian — ever ready to endure and prevail’’, a resounding success at the Winter Olympics.

However, under a unique and colourful atmosphere, Bobsled athlete Akuoma Omeoga was seen as the bearer of Nigeria’s flag as the country makes its debut at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

Brakewoman Omeoga is part of the trio of Seun Adigun and Ngozi Onwumere, driver and brakewoman respectively who have become West-Africa’s first bobsled team to qualify for the Winter Games.

Another record breaker making the match at the Games alongside the trio is Simidele Adeagbo, Nigeria’s first female skeleton athlete to feature in the Winter Games event.

Otunba Gbenga Elegbeleye, former Director-General, National Sports Commission, who was appointed by President Mohammadu Buhari as chef de mission (Leader of delegation) was equally captured alongside the ladies moving the flag in a match past during the opening ceremony held at the Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium.

The 2018 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XXIII Olympic Winter Games and commonly known as PyeongChang 2018, is an ongoing international multi-sport event hosted by the county of Pyeongchang, South Korea.
